Summer is the perfect time to invest in yourself and thrive! One way you can do this is by improving your career prospects through learning new skills.

Whether you’re keen to advance in your current industry, looking to make a career change, or simply want to stay relevant in the ever-changing job market, there are some key skills that every employer is looking for.

Each year, Learning Curve Group prioritise upskilling the nation during summer as part of our Summer of Skills campaign!

Here are our top five skills to learn this summer to boost your career:

1. Problem-Solving

Unfortunately, no job is as smooth sailing as we’d like it to be, and problems can arise in every field. But, if you can show that you’re an effective problem solver – that you can analyse complex situations, identify solutions, and implement them effectively – then you’re already one step ahead.

Critical thinking, creativity and analytical skills are all key qualities of being an excellent problem solver. Develop your skills in evaluating and analysing information, understanding patterns, making decisions, and thinking of innovative ways to solve problems and you’ll become a competitive candidate for interviews and promotions.

2. Adaptability

Workplaces are changing faster than ever before and so the ability to adapt to these changes is a crucial skill that employers are looking for. Being adaptable means being able to react to changes appropriately. You’ve got to be open to change firstly, you have to be willing to learn new skills to fit this change and ensure you’re flexible for future changes!

Employers are looking for adaptable employees who are willing to pivot between different responsibilities and tasks when needed – usually when priorities are shifted. They need people who are able to navigate changes in the industry, field and landscape to suit the needs of the business.

3. Teamwork

Teamwork is really at the heart of any business. If you can show you’ve got teamwork skills, you’re really showing that you can collaborate effectively, you can communicate, you’re efficient and you’re productive – all the things essential for business survival!

No one can do it all on their own – and no one wants to! The beauty of teamwork is the fact that it involves leveraging the unique skills, perspectives and abilities of different team members.

4. Communication

Whether you’re expressing ideas, solving problems, building relationships, or simply sending an email, communication permeates everything you do. This means it’s very important that you can communicate effectively in both your written and verbal interactions. It makes all the difference in getting things done efficiently and effectively!

Excellent communication skills not only lead to collaboration, reduced errors, and improved customer satisfaction but it also stands you in good stead to become an effective leader. Leaders communicate visions, goals, and expectations clearly to their teams and so employees with these skills are often considered for leadership roles and promotions making it an excellent skill for career advancement.

5. Project Management

In almost every industry, there will be some aspect of project management. An effective project manager will ensure that tasks are completed effectively, on time, and within budget which is highly valued by employers. They can identify risks, mitigate them and ensure that projects run smoothly, and teams are motivated and coordinated so organisational goals are achieved.

By focusing on developing these skills, you will increase your chances of success, making you more versatile, employable, and prepared for future challenges!

Not everybody knows this, but the government and devolved combined authorities set aside money for adult education. In fact, it’s called the Adult Education Budget (AEB), and it funds a huge range of training! Its sole purpose is to empower adults to gain the essential skills and knowledge needed to progress in their existing roles or transition into new ones.
