More Leverage on the Levy
In February, the admissions service revealed that apprenticeships will finally qualify for UCAS Tariff points from September onwards. What does this mean for employers?
In February, the admissions service revealed that apprenticeships will finally qualify for UCAS Tariff points from September onwards.
For some universities and colleges, individuals need a certain amount of UCAS points to be able to qualify for their course. Historically, post-16 qualifications like A Levels, T Levels and BTECs have been the main qualifiers for UCAS points, making them the logical academic route for individuals wanting to go to university.
For too long, the status of apprenticeships has been lower than that of these other education and training pathways, despite their tremendous value in developing the skills of individuals. But now, they will qualify for UCAS points, which is a fantastic step toward recognising the value
of apprenticeships.
What this means for employers: a whole new talent pool
With apprenticeships now carrying UCAS Tariff points, they’re placed on a level playing field with the traditional academic routes in terms of recognition. This hopefully means that apprenticeships will be more visible and appealing to a broader range of students and school-leavers. For employers, this should translate into a more extensive and diverse talent pool to draw from when you’re seeking skilled individuals to join your team.
And in the coming years, once former apprentices progress on to university and graduate with a degree, the talent pool will be even more rich. Individuals will be equipped with both theoretical and practical skills, as well as expert knowledge to dive straight into their careers. So, keep your eyes peeled!
More leverage on the Levy
More individuals interested in choosing the apprenticeship pathway should translate to a reduced Levy-underspend for employers, too. Employers should now promote apprenticeship opportunities more than ever before. With more individuals hopefully interested in taking the apprenticeship route due to their newly aligned UCAS value, employers can maximise their Levy contributions to develop their existing workforce and attract and nurture new talent.
Diversification of your workforce
Not all young people are suited to, or interested in, pursuing the traditional academic route of college then University. And that’s because everybody is unique! One of the great things about apprenticeships is that they attract individuals with diverse backgrounds, learning styles and skill sets. By acknowledging apprenticeships alongside academic qualifications, a more diverse pool of learners will enrol on them, meaning employers can tap into more diverse talent! And a more diverse workplace results in a richer range of perspectives and experiences. We don’t need to go into why that’s brilliant for productivity and innovation, do we?
Skills validation for your comfort
In case doubts ever lingered in your mind about the quality of provision, making you hesitant to hire apprentices or place your existing staff on apprenticeship programmes, this news serves as a validation of the skills and competencies developed through the programmes. You can now have greater confidence in the quality of the apprenticeship training, knowing that they are recognised in the national education framework and will fill the skills shortages in your workforce.
We have always worked closely with our employer partners to tailor our programmes to meet your evolving needs and changing industry demands. We truly value employers’ input.
Work with us to maximise your Apprenticeship Levy contributions and help shape our programmes to ensure we’re meeting your needs and equipping apprentices with the skills and knowledge required for success in your workforce. To find out more about Learning Curve Group’s offering, contact our experienced Apprenticeship Specialists by emailing LCGAppAcademy@learningcurvegroup.co.uk.
“Apprenticeships have long been under-recognised despite the tremendous value they bring to businesses. I’m glad that this is now changing.”
